Horticulture Internships at the Arboretum

Horticulture internships are available at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum for the 2010 growing season. Interns participate in all aspects of garden and arboretum management including planting, mulching, watering, weeding, pruning, fertilizing, mowing, propagating and record keeping. Interns rotate through the different specialty gardens and collections and may select an area of concentration. Applicants should possess a keen interest in horticulture and must enjoy physical work outdoors.

Matilda' Tea Postponed Due To Expected Snow

With the National Weather Service predicting 8-10 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow, we have postponed the Annual Matilda's Tea for Children, Hats Off to Matilda from tomorrow to its snow date of February 20th.

 

There are still some tickets left, so take this opportunity to sign up for you and your daughter or granddaughter. It's a wonderful event for all.

Plant List Growing

The 15th Annual Friends Plant Sale (click on the image on the right for the Plant Sale page) is only a few months off. Co-chairs, Sue Acheson and llona Ontscherenki are deep into the ordering process from our various wholesalers and nurseries. Volunteers are busily planning the catering for the Members-only Party and Sale as well as arranging the raffle prizes.

Browser Problems

This is not a horticulture-related post, but rather a warning about browser vulnerability. You have probably seen lots of news about the attacks suffered by Google in China. What you may not realize is that the attacks exploited a set of vulnerabilities in the most commonly used web browser, Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Computer experts have long warned about the need to keep software up-to-date, and this latest set of attacks has actually led several governments (France, Germany, Australia, to name a few) to warn their citizens to stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Plant Sale Planning Begins

As most of you well know, the Friends Annual Plant Sale is a really big event, featuring thousands of exquisite, collectible plants, dozens of roving Plant Experts and, for members attending the Members-only Party and Sale Friday evening, lots of good food and drink together with first-choice of the plant material. The dates are Friday, April 30th for the Members-only Party and Saleand Saturday May 1st for the Public Plant Sale.

Blackburn Scholarship and County College of Morris

We are pleased to announce that The Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum has formed a partnership with County College of Morris and will be awarding the Benjamin C. Blackburn Scholarship to a student of that institution in 2010.

While walking to the Haggert Center recently, I spied a scene that I thought we could all enjoy during this cold winter. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge it.

The garden catalogs and emails are filling my mailboxes, so winter does serve some purpose after all.
