Friends 2011 Trip to Scotland

Arrival in Scotland

We left Newark Thursday evening on time, though it was a little hectic with a gate change after we had all gotten to the original gate. The flight was uneventful and arrived in Glasgow a few minutes early where we met Dave, our driver and guide. He showed us around Glasgow, driving around George Square, the university, the cathedral and infirmary. Best of all, he took us to the city's arboretum, the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. The two, 19th century glass houses, numerous specimen trees and blooms everywhere made this a special feature for our arrival. We then drove on to Peebles, about an hour and a half from Glasgow.
We stopped there for lunch, with several of us picking a nice hotel where, in addition to the variety of nice lunches we selected, the waitress prepared a sample of haggis for us to try. It was really quite tasty.
Then it was on to the Macdonald Hotel in Cardrona. Located in an attractive setting, it was nestled in a valley alongside the River Tweed (of fly fishing fame). Sheep dotted the hills and it sported a golf course where at least one of our group hit a bucket of balls before the rains hit.
We had dinner at the hotel before collapsing into our beds. It was a long first day.

Scotland Trip

As you probably know, as part of its 40th anniversary celebration this year, the Friends are sponsoring a garden trip to Scotland in late May and early June (tons of details on our Scotland Trip pages).

For us to maintain our fabulous pricing, we have to get your signup by no later than January 20th. If you would like to go but are planning on traveling alone and would like a roommate, we would be glad to pair you with another adventurous gardener. All our accommodations feature two twin beds.

Trip Insurance

Trip insurance is an important element of any major trip and the Friends are pleased to offer coverage at no extra cost (yes, it is included in the quoted price).

The terms of the insurance may be found by clicking here. Please note that any refunds provided by the trip insurance will be net of the $300 per person contribution to the Friends incorporated in the price.

We had a very nice group at this afternoon's presentation about the Friends 40th Anniversary Trip to Scotland. The gentle rain didn't seem to dampen any spirits-- probably the bagpipes and smoked salmon helped.

Scotland Trip Itinerary

map_of_scotland-thThe Friends turn 40 next year and have put together a trip to Scotland in celebration. We will focus on the south of Scotland, an area of wide-ranging climate. The gardens are equally diverse displaying everything from tropical to alpine. Read more below for details of this exciting trip and come to our program preview on Sunday September 12th at the Arboretum. Check regularly the Scotland trip section here on the website as we add more details.

The map on the right gives an overview of our route, showing each of our overnight destinations. Click on the map, by the way, to see a larger version. The remainder of this article will talk about these overnight locations and what we will see at each stop along our route. A much more detailed, daily itinerary with many weblinks may be found in the section entitled, Scotland Itinerary. Click there to browse through each day's activities.

Glasgow

On arrival in Glasgow, we will board our bus for a city tour of Scotland's second city. It is full of fine examples of old and new architecture, including medieval churches and fine late Victorian structures. Following the tour of the city, we will motor southeast to the small town of Peebles, where we will relax, dine and overnight at the beautiful Macdonald Cardrona Hotel & Golf Course. Trip to Scotland, Spring, 2011

The Friends start celebrating their 40th Anniversary with a fabulous trip to Scotland, just in time for the Edinburgh Flower Show.

Learn all about the public and private gardens (and a wee bit of shopping) that travelers will enjoy at this informational talk complete with Scottish fare and accompanying bagpipers. Speakers include Susan Cloyd from C-I-E Tours International and Trip Co-Chairs Karen Curry and Ollie Acheson.

Haggerty Education Center - 9:00 am to 4:30 pm every day of the week (except holidays). It is also open for participants in scheduled events at other times.
