Plant Remediators
Many of us are making home repairs and improvements following super storm sandy. That new carpeting, paint and drywall all produce off-gassing of potentially harmful pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde. Through photosynthesis, plants can help to remove these and other chemical gases. NASA has done many studies on this subject and recommends something like 15 plants in 6” pots (or the equivalent) to clean the air of a 2,000 square foot space. Here is a list of their favorite “sick building” plant remediators:
- English Ivy (Hedera helix)
- Spider Plant (Cholorophytum comosum)
- Golden Pothos (Scindapsus aures)
- Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum hybrids)
- Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema hybrids )
- Bamboo Plant (Chamaedorea sefritzii)
- Snake Plant (Sansevieria hybrids)
- Philodendrons (Philodendron hybrids
so, make sure to include some plants in your design plan and budget!
