Check Out My Blog

I tried the new version of WordPress a week or so ago. It is quite impressive, so I set it up on my web server. You can look at it at http://home.acheson.org/blog.

12/3/05 Aargh! Verizon was in last Thursday to move some wires and disconnected the dsl. Took till today (Saturday) to reconnect.

11/25/05 This website was offline for several days. Web access was via the old version of my home page. With luck I will keep it up and running better in the future.

9/25/05 Upgraded the photo gallery software to Gallery 2.0. Went quite smoothly. Click here to go to the new gallery (or use the link in the left bar).

9/16/05 I rebuilt my website to use mediawiki, the software behind Wikipedia. I did this primarily because I am intrigued by the concept of wikis, websites that any user can modify. This became an exercise in seeing how easily I could generate a complete website within the framework provided by the mediawiki package.

So far I find it pretty complete, though having spent time in Dreamweaver, I do see a number of restrictions. With Dreamweaver, of course, you can use an extremely powerful WYSIWYG editor or a nicely prompted HTML editor. Mediawiki is certainly capable, but nowhere near to Dreamweaver in tuning a page to exactly the layout you want. On the other hand, mediawiki is a wiki, meaning anyone can add or modify anything on the site. This is powerful stuff for any group wanting to work together on a site. It has tables, images (this is my dog Hunter in extreme closeup -- you can see he has plenty of nose for getting into things), alignment and lots of other markup capability.

I will add my thoughts as I work longer with mediawiki.

About Me

I am a businessman by day (involved with an environmental equipment company) and am also deeply involved with photography (digital, of course) and computers. These interests are reflected in the material on this site.

I also will add interesting material on my family and pets.

About the Site

As I mentioned above, you can edit this website. It's a wiki! Editing help may be found at the MediaWiki site or just dive right in and click on the "edit" tab at the top.

Also, look at the navigation bar on the left. That's where you can cruise around the permanent structure of this site.

Finally, here are some important other links, mostly from the earlier website:
