The Importance of the Friends' Annual Plant Sale
Here's why it's important for you to shop at the Friends' Annual Plant Sale: It's our primary fundraiser and every single penny we make goes into programming, planting grants and education at the Arboretum. It allows us to remain active and help ensure that the Arboretum grounds look as good as possible.
This is not just another plant sale, we'll be offering a variety of natives as well as some hard to find plants. Please help us achieve our goals by shopping with us. Thank you!

Plant Sale Setup Under Way
The Plant Sale began in earnest Monday morning by putting shelving together and hanging lights before the "stars of the show' (3,700 plants) arrived. The afternoon was spent organizing and tagging the plants for sale. We had fun. A very exciting start to a great Plant Sale!

With warm weather comes a return to longer days and lots of garden activity, along with aching feet, hips and backs. Digging holes, weeding beds, dividing perennials, mulching and moving pots around can take its toll on bodies of any age!
Dr. David Mueller (Podiatry) and Dr. Andrew Marques (Physical Therapy) will be on hand Friday, May 17th to talk about how to remain injury free and vigorous in the garden. They will discuss how to strengthen the lower parts of your musculoskeletal system as well as some of the most common problems that they see in gardeners. Space is limited so grab a spot while you can.

HOME GARDEN CLUB OF MORRISTOWN PROGRAM
Edible Flowering Plants with Althea Lewellyn
Wednesday, May 15 - 1:00 PM
At the Morris Plains VFW
The Home Garden Club of Morristown will be sponsoring a free lecture by Althea Llewellyn on “Edible Flowering Plants”. She is a former president of the Master Gardeners of Union County and an environmental educator, speaker and “Square Foot Gardening” specialist.
Ms. Llewellyn will be talking about how some flowers, in addition to being beautiful, can be used to enhance the flavor of baked goods, soups. eggs, cocktails and more, or as a garnish to enhance a dish’s appeal. Many flowers have their own distinctive flavor yet it’s important to be aware of plants that are edible and those that can be dangerous to ingest.
If you’d like to attend, please send an email to: slevenbach.sl@gmail.com so we can save you a seat. Also, since we are evaluating our advertising venues, please indicate that you heard about the lecture via The Frelinghuysen Arboretum's eblast.
More and more plants are beginning to bloom now that we've entered the lovely month of May. A gorgeous, deep purple Dwarf Bearded Iris, Iris cv. Dark Vader, is flowering in the Progressive Garden next to the first parking bay. Close by, an Epimedium cv. Pink Champagne (Bishop's Hat) is covering the ground with delicate, pale pink spurred flowers. Not to be outdone, a Cornus florida f. Rubra (Pink Flowering Dogwood) is in full, dramatic bloom at the end of a parking bay close to the Plant Sale tent.
Varieties of all of the above will be sold at the Plant Sale, so plan to shop early to make sure your choices are available!
