2024 TREE SYMPOSIUM
The Friends will be hosting our Annual Tree Symposium on Saturday, November 2. Beginning with registration and coffee, attendees will be welcomed to a series of five presentations by a wide variety of speakers. Ranging from small ornamental trees, to Beech tree diseases, to grafting methods for tree propagation, this promises to be a very interesting and informative way to spend your Saturday.
The first speaker of the day will be Bruce Crawford, familiar to a lot of us as the Garden Manager at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and other horticultural sites of the Morris County Park Commission. Bruce's talk will elaborate on his long-standing "love affair with trees" - a very personal look at the largest residents in our gardens!
More to follow on other speakers and their topics in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
A Look at the Olmsteds in New Jersey - SAVE THE DATE
Saturday, September 28 - 1:00 PM at the Haggerty Education Center
Frederick Law Olmsted's philosophy was to create parks for everyone, thus the use of the word democracy (with a small 'd') in the program title. He believed that connection to nature in urban areas was restorative and conducive to mental and physical well-being; he saw the power of parks to bring people of every background together. Olmsted's parks in New Jersey will be highlighted.
Anne 'Dede' Neal Petri holds a degree in American History and LIterature from Harvard University and a JD from Harvard Law School. During the course of a varied and brilliant career, she served as First Vice President and then President of the Garden Club of America, and is now the President and CEO of the Olmsted Network, the only national organization dedicated to protecting, preserving, and restoring Olmsted parks and landscapes across the country. In April, Dede received the National Garden Club of America's 2024 Distinguished Service Medal for her "tireless service on behalf of plants and the spaces created to showcase them".
Light refreshments will be served.

A month ago we posted photos of the missing arbor and newly repaved walk into the Haggerty Education Center. We're happy to share the news that the new arbor has been installed and it is a thing of beauty, as can be seen in Bruce Crawford's photo below. A closeup of the new walk's paving design is also attached.
Make sure to visit soon to see the new arbor/walk as well as all the lovely end of summer and early autumn flowering plants.
