WORKSHOP - WRITING ABOUT OUR GARDENS, with Ryder S. Wyatt

Thursday, October 24 - 10:00 AM

In the Mansion at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Ryder S. Wyatt

Have you ever wanted to capture a moment in time in nature or found self expression through your work in the garden? Join us as we explore the garden in written word. There are several ways writers convey their love of the time they spend in nature, and in and around their gardens. One is in memoir form, and the other is by writing personal narrative. Personal narrative is a factual retelling of an event in your life, written in a linear fashion, as you remember it. Memoir is retelling of a segment of your life, written knowing memory is fallible. In memoir, the emotions surrounding the events guide the writer to recreate the narrative. Join Ms. Wyatt as she explains the various ways in which the two forms differ.

This hour and a half workshop will include a short lesson, informal discussion, free write, opportunity to read work and feedback. Attendees will receive prompts to guide them during the process. Please bring photos or other tangible items to the workshop to help you remember.

Ryder S. Wyatt has been a writer for more than three decades. She holds a BA in Communications and Journalism from New England College, a degree in Executive Coaching from Columbia University's Teachers College, and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her work has appeared in many journals and magazines, including The New York Times, Newsweek and various blogs, websites and news outlets. The NPR broadcast, "Cultivating Place", featured Ryder's heirloom gardens and home in a June 2017 podcast.

A life-long nature lover and self-taught gardener, Ryder was a Zone Four Garden History and Design representative for the Garden Club of America and her club's Garden History and Design Chair for ten years. She is the fourth generation to live on her family's homestead, once a thriving 300-acre working Black Angus farm previously owned by her grandparents and father - the subject of her memoir in progress.
