THE BENJAMIN BLACKBURN SCHOLARSHIP LECTURE

Speaker: Photographer, Rob Cardillo

Saturday, February 8 - 1:00 PM (Snow Date: Sunday, February 9)

In person at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Since 1979, the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum have supported horticultural education through a scholarship named for Dr. Benjamin Blackburn, who was a Professor of Botany at Drew University. Dr. Blackburn was also involved with the Morris County Park Commission through his friendship with Henry and Robert Tubbs, whose property became the Willowwood Arboretum.

Admission fees for this Lecture support the scholarship that is offered to students in the Landscape Technology Program at County College of Morris (CCM).

Dave DePodwin, one of 2018's Blackburn Scholarship Award winners has this to say about the scholarship:

The Blackburn Scholarship: What it Means To Me

"In 2018, having retired from decades in business management, I was enrolled at County College of Morris, pursuing horticulture certificates in landscape design, construction and garden center management, plus a good dose of plant science sown in. That was the first I learned of the Blackburn Scholarship offered by the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum to CCM Landscape Technology students. The application overview read: “established to honor the memory of Dr. Benjamin C. Blackburn, a professor of Botany at Drew University in Madison. Professor Blackburn's interest and professional support was a great help to the Arboretum and to the Friends during their fledgling years.”

The idea of supporting area horticulture appealed to my interest in garden history, especially at the local level along with a commitment of giving back. So I decided to apply. In spring that year, I was honored to receive one of the two scholarships. Soon thereafter, I worked as a garden intern at the Arboretum, especially loving to help with outside volunteer groups and attempting to learn every plant and tree. All the while, the inspiring professors at CCM helped stoke my desire to learn.

In 2020, I began working with select residential clients improving their garden and landscape spaces. And since 2022, I have joined like-minded volunteers on Wednesday mornings at Cross Estate Gardens, Jockey Hollow, Morristown National Historical Park. In these turbulent times, what could be better than the peace and quiet found in a garden, working with one’s hands and with others to help gardens and people grow.

I remain gratified to the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum for fostering my passion for landscape gardening."

Please register for this program and help us support students like Dave, who will work diligently to see that good landscape practices become the norm in our towns.
