Hips and Haws

It’s time for hips and haws – and the pair of Korean Mountain Ash, Sorbus alnifolia, right outside the Haggerty Education Center are ablaze with golden leaves and soft red berries.

Robin -click to enlarge

These lovely 4-season performers are also filled with birds enjoying their acerbic and astringent berries – like the robins in this photo – can you see them?

In China, a jam is made from these berries, but we hesitate to recommend them for eating as there may be some counter indications. We do however, recommend them as a perfect small tree, topping out at about 20.’

It’s nice to know that the Emerald Ash Borer is not a potential enemy, as this is not a true ash, but a member of the rose family.

Fungus Fest

If you haven’t been to the arboretum this fall for a walk, this would be a perfect weekend to do so.

The Fungus Fest is on Sunday and our friends from the NJ Mycological Association put on quite a show-

Afterwards, perhaps stop by Matilda’s Café for a Pumpkin Spice Latte.
