Members Only Garden Lovers Book Club

Virtual Meeting via Zoom

Did you know that there is a group of interested gardeners that meet once a month on a Monday afternoon at 1:30pm to share their love of gardening?

The club reads and discusses gardening books, talks about garden trips, shares gardening successes and failures and exchanges ideas.

For the March meeting, we will be exploring a different type of subject. No book needs be read. We are encouraging internet research (or books if you prefer). See the information from one of our members, who will be leading our discussion at the March meeting.

When we read Second  Nature by Michael Pollen, we touched on a quote "Americans have yet to produce many world famous gardens or landscape architects, or to found a style of garden design that anyone would want to copy." We all seemed to agree that this was an unfair statement of our nation's contributions to horticultural design, so the March discussion is our rebuttal to that statement.

We are asking you to look at some great examples of garden design from coast to coast and discuss why they are uniquely American and why they are worthy of world wide attention. Below is a list of ten gardens that you might choose from but feel free to pick another that says American design to you. It can be one you have visited, read about, public or private or done by a well known garden designer. Since we will not have pictures please sell us your choice with words.

Here our some gardens you might choose from:

Chanticleer (Northeast)

Heronswood or Windcliff (Pacific Coast)

Desert Botanical Garden (Arizona)

Watnong Gardens (NJ)

The Highline (NYC)

Fairchild Tropical Gardens (MIami)

Coastal Maine Botanic Gardens (Maine)

Lotusland (California)

So even if you don't have any candidates join us and we will convince you what wonderful and diverse gardens we have from sea to shining sea.

Free for Members of the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum but registration is required.  A Zoom link will be sent to you prior to the meeting.
