Announcements as of January 23, 2019

We know people’s schedules are busy, so walk-ins to the speaker programs are welcome. However, early registration will guarantee you a seat and will help us plan.

BENJAMIN BLACKBURN SCHOLARSHIP LECTURE

Saturday, February 2 (Snow Date: Sunday, February 3)

Since 1979, the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum have supported horticultural education through a scholarship named for Dr. Benjamin Blackburn. This year’s Blackburn Lecture speaker is Dr. Joan Maloof. Dr. Maloof’s lecture, Speaking for the Trees: The Importance of Old-Growth Forests, is not only timely but fascinating and incredibly important. Dr. Maloof is Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University and founded the Old-Growth Forest Network to preserve, protect and promote the country’s few remaining stands of old-growth forest. Dr. Maloof spends her time lecturing, writing, visiting forests, assisting private landowners and supporting local groups trying to protect community forests from development.

Dr. Blackburn was a professor of Botany at Drew University. He published many articles and wrote a number of books on gardening as well as being the host of a very popular radio gardening program. He generously shared his vast knowledge and deep love for horticulture with many staff members in the Horticulture Division and with his countless fans, members of the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and area garden clubs.

Admission fees support the scholarship that is offered to students in the Landscape and Horticultural Technology Program at County College of Morris. This scholarship allows interested students the opportunity to explore the different horticultural, environmental and design studies offered through the accredited CCM program. The increased knowledge the students acquire in the classroom and through hands-on programs at CCM will benefit them as they enter their chosen field in horticulture and landscape design.

A book signing and light refreshments follow the talk.

This program is eligible for 2.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.

THE STATE OF INVASIVES IN NEW JERSEY WITH MICHAEL VAN CLEF, PH.D.

Tuesday, February 26

Michael Van Clef is the owner of Ecological Solutions, LLC and serves the NJ Invasives Strike Team as Science Director. He has a Ph.D. in ecology from Rutgers University and over 20 years of experience in land stewardship, planning and research, working extensively in the evaluation and management of rare and invasive species. He has consulted with over 30 organizations in NJ, including the NJ Invasive Species Council for which he prepared the New Jersey Strategic Management Plan for Invasive Species.

In this lecture, Dr. Van Clef provides insight and an update on New Jersey’s invasive species, something we should all be aware of.

This program is eligible for 1.5 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.

NINTH ANNUAL COMMUNITY GARDEN CONFERENCE

Saturday, March 2 – (Snow Date: Sunday, March 3)

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Morris County are teaming up again to present their Annual Community Garden Conference for the ninth year in a row. This year’s keynote speaker is Barbara Pleasant, Author, Lecturer and Vegetable Gardening Expert for Mother Earth News. Her talk, Creating Abundance – The Community Gardening Experience, will highlight the many things that go on among gardeners who work with others or share what they grow, along with the often unsung benefits to individuals and communities. The impressive list of session speakers, all experts in their field, will cover topics both relevant and pertinent to community gardeners, garden managers and those trying to establish a new community garden.

It’s a full day of education, exhibitors, networking and camaraderie, and don’t forget to bring a donation for the Interfaith Food Pantry of Morris County. Lunch is provided.

Just one week left to register at $50.00, the Conference fee goes up to $60.00 on February 1, so be sure to register now.

This program is eligible for 5.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.
