SCHEDULE ANNOUNCEMENTS

GARDENS REOPENED

The Morris County Park Commission (MCPC) has reopened the Frelinghuysen, Willowwood and Bamboo Brook Arboreta 7 days a week, from 8am to dusk.

  • Parking is limited. Buildings remain closed. Portajohns are available.
  • Please protect yourselves and fellow visitors by social distancing and by wearing masks.

HUNTING IN THE PARKS

Be aware that deer hunting is permitted in many of the MCPC facilities, including the arboreta, during the fall and winter. The schedule and type (bow or firearm) is listed on the MCPC website here.

We will keep you posted as further updates become available.



GINGERBREAD WONDERLAND 2020 GOES VIRTUAL

Celebrating 29 Years of Wonder!

The facilities at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum will remain closed through the end of the year so the Friends' Gingerbread Wonderland Planning Committee is busy working on how to bring you a Virtual Gingerbread Wonderland Display to celebrate the 29th year of this very popular show. You'll be invited to view photographs of each delectable entry and, through a donation process, vote for your favorite creation.

Chef Cynthia Triolo will present a special online gingerbread class (time to be announced) so you'll be able to hone your skills or learn new ones.

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum are happy to work with the Rutgers Master Gardeners to bring you this free program.

Master Gardener, Ilona Ontscherenki, will speak about the ten most common invasive plants found in Morris County and various methods to use to remove them, as well as suggestions and descriptions of native plants that can be substituted for them.

Learn how to protect your landscape from these invasive plants and what you can do to help protect the environment and native habitat for wildlife.

This program is free but registration is required.

SPRING TULIP SHOWSTOPPER

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum are pleased to present the following free Zoom program.

At The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, tulips are a spring showstopper. Every year, the gardeners plant thousands of bulbs to delight the public. Horticultural Display Foreman, Kristin Prommel, will discuss what goes into the annual bulb installation, including design, layout and planting. She will also touch on what happens to the bulbs after the show is over in the spring and what can be done to conceal fading bulb foliage.

The program is free, but registration is required.

A Recorded Cooking Demonstration

In our opinion it's not possible to have too many Tomatoes!

Watch Cynthia Triolo in this recorded cooking demonstration all about tomatoes. She will make a pasta dish, some bruschetta and a tomato sorbet that you are sure to love. Recipes will be available as well.

2020 TREE SYMPOSIUM

Planning has been completed for the third annual Tree Symposium, in a new format via Zoom.

Speakers will present a range of intriguing tree-related topics at 7:00 PM, on five consecutive Tuesday evenings.

Rutgers Master Gardener CEUs as well as International Society of Arboriculture CEUs will be offered.
